There’s a dangerous myth that therapy is for people who are broken, unstable, or weak. Contrary to the beliefs of some, there are things that you can't just pray away. These beliefs have kept countless men from seeking help when they need it most. But here’s the truth: therapy isn’t a last resort—it’s a proactive tool for growth, resilience, and clarity.
Men face unique challenges in their mental health journey, often navigating stress, trauma, and emotional repression without guidance. Those unique challenges can be multiplied when coming from the Black community where many are raised to not talk about what they've seen, experienced or heard. 'What happens in this house stays in this house' has kept many men and women alike, from seeking help. Therapy provides a safe space to unpack those experiences, identify patterns, and learn tools to cope.
Seeing a therapist doesn’t make you less of a man. In fact, it means you care enough about your life and the people in it to do the work. It’s one of the most courageous steps you can take. Taking care of your mental health is just another form of self-care, an important part.
If you’ve been thinking about therapy—go. If you’ve never considered it, give it a chance. Your mental health matters. And healing is available. No matter what you’ve survived, struggled with, or been shamed for—you are not broken. You are becoming.
Every time you speak up. Every time you rest. Every time you choose healing—you reclaim your life.
This month is about more than awareness. It’s about reinforcing your right to heal.
