Life with lupus has not been easy for Me. In fact, the hardest part was getting diagnosed. For years, I had many of the symptoms of lupus, however, they were often mistaken for the fibromyalgia that I had already been diagnosed with. As the skin and hair started to disappear from My face, I was left in constant confusion about what was actually wrong with Me.
There are various types of lupus such as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), Discoid Lupus Erythematosus (DLE), Drug-Induced Lupus (DIL), Neonatal Lupus, and Subacute Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus (SCLE).
Type | Affects | Common Symptoms | Reversible? |
SLE | Multiple organs | Fatigue, joint pain, rash, organ damage | Chronic, managed long-term |
DLE | Skin only | Scarring skin lesions, hair loss | May be chronic; flares manageable |
DIL | Joints, muscles | Muscle/joint pain, fever | Yes – resolves after stopping drug |
Neonatal | Newborns | Rash, heart/liver issues | Yes – most symptoms fade in months |
Lupus can look different from day to day—and from person to person. But here are some of the most common symptoms people with lupus experience:
✅ Extreme fatigue
✅ Joint pain and swelling
✅ Rashes or skin lesions (especially a butterfly-shaped rash across the cheeks)
✅ Hair loss
✅ Sensitivity to sunlight
✅ Mouth ulcers
✅ Fevers
✅ Chest pain or breathing difficulties
✅ Brain fog or memory issues
As someone living with Discoid Lupus, skin symptoms are a major part of my journey—but I’ve also experienced many of the other symptoms on this list.
